Sometimes, Trauma Event
Weekend Residential, February 2025
Practical Tools in Working with Trauma
We are delighted to announce the first Sometimes, Trauma event. This will take place over the weekend of 1st/2nd February 2025. This will include a day workshop at Woodbury Park Hotel, near Exeter in East Devon.
The workshop will run on Saturday, from 10.00-17.30pm. This will have a CPD value of seven hours, and can be attended as a standalone event.
For those wishing to extend their weekend to form a Retreat space, there will be evening activities from the “Sometimes Trauma Headquarters” (our home!) in Otterton on the Saturday evening and planned activities (hopefully outdoors) on the Sunday. We are limiting places to around 15 people, so please do reserve a space to avoid any potential disappointment.
For more information, see below.

CPD Hours
It is anticipated that the event will give 7 CPD hours for your portfolios.
Application Form and Fees
In order to be allocated a place at this event, please complete the application form and a deposit invoice will be sent to you to reserve your place. So that we can book the venue and make other arrangements, we are asking for a non-refundable deposit of £50 (full paying) or £15 (reduced rate – 2 spaces available). The full balance of the event fee will be payable a month before the event.
It is not our intention to make a profit from the event, but to offer it at cost, with a minimal fee for those who are delivering for Sometimes, Trauma (musicians/co-facilitators). Whilst we have an idea of fees at this stage, we cannot confirm fully the amount as this will be based on final numbers. However, we anticipate that it will be from £90 – £110, (low cost spaces x 2 at £50).
Course Content
Workshop Overview:
The workshop will revolve around practical aspects of working with Trauma in the therapy room, as well as providing a retreat-like opportunity to look inwards and practise our own regulation. As well as some internal focusing, we will be looking at the Sometimes Trauma Emotional Regulation Toolkit. This comes in the form of a brand-new and resource-rich 40 page booklet and everyone attending will receive a free copy. We will be looking in some detail at:
- The importance of Emotional Regulation work with traumatised clients (Theory)
- The Triphasic Model & Working Safely
- Difficulties facing therapists adjusting their core model to include new tools
- Internal Processing: Identifying our personal comfort/discomfort zones.
- Pushing our Boat Out.
In the afternoon there will be a choice of activities. Please see below:
Option One: Overtone Singing Introduction
Using our bodies and the full capacity of our voices is an incredibly powerful way for clients and therapists alike to express what gets stored in the body and grow our spiritual/meditative resources. Overtone Chanting is an ancient vocal technique of holding a single note and simultaneously sounding the harmonics of that note. The harmonics are heard above the drone note as a high pitched flute-like or bell-like sound.
As well as being intriguing and fun, overtone singing offers a unique way of using the voice in a relaxed way which can have many benefits (improved well-being, increased concentration attentiveness in a way which is both calming and invigorating). This is offered to us by David Moss and Masha Kaestner who have been offering this weird and wonderful way of meditative expression for over 15 years.
Option Two: Peer Sharing & Practical Support
This will be a chance to compare notes with peers about which aspects of working with Trauma challenge you personally in your practice. Focusing on expanding awareness whilst playing to your strengths, we will be sharing best practice here and talking through specific aspects of psychoeducation and regulation practice from the Toolkit. There will be a focus on somatic and embodied practice.
Spa Activities: If you wish to combine the workshop with use of the Spa and Leisure facilities at Woodbury Park (Hot tub, steam room, pool and sauna), then let me know as we can get hold of guest passes for Saturday, following the event.
Saturday Evening/Sunday Plans:
Weather permitting, we hope to continue the music/meditation and reconnections of the workshop from Otterton. This will involve an open house with an evening meal (veggie/vegan options available), hopefully a fire and shared poetry/music.
On Sunday morning, we will plan an excursion event (probably walking from Otterton to Budleigh Salterton along the River Otter), so bring hiking boots/comfortable clothing and a warm coat etc. We have access to a mobility scooter for anyone who needs it and lifts will be available also.
Accommodation:
I have some limited accommodation here at the house available for those with no overnight budget for the event. We know some good free park-up places for any of you have vans/vehicles to sleep in. Ladram Bay Holiday Park let out static caravans in the winter relatively cheaply (about £260 for 3 nights for 2 bedrooms sleeping up to 6 people, so some people might want to make a weekend of it and come Friday to Sunday). The village pub The Kings Arms, Otterton is a very lovely place to stay too. Sidmouth and Budleigh Salterton are also local and available. Woodbury Park Hotel (the workshop venue) is a few miles away, but very quick by car. If you need any help with accomodation, let us know on the booking form.
